What Purity Means to Me

Purity is more about wearing a ring on your finger. It's about the commitment you make to God about waiting and finding the right partner. Too many teens these days are participating in sexual acts that seem like a great/fun idea at the time, but can lead to many problems. One problem in particular is sexually transmitted diseases. Humans are sexual beings, but that doesn't mean one should just go out there and get with everyone they can. There are so many temptations out in the real world and a lot of teens fail to recognize the work of the devil.

I'm not sure where they purchased them, but it makes me angry that these same kids are the ones going around and having sex with each other. For some reason it's "cool" to look and act like a christian in front of a big group, but when they get outside of the group they go back on their true feelings. They are a completely different person and forget about their decision to stay pure.

In addition to STDs, sexual acts before marriage can cause emotional scaring. I knew a girl in high school that had sex with her boyfriend after dating for only a month. Turns out, he was also getting with other girls and ended up cheating on her a lot. This caused a lot of damage to her psych and she ended up committing suicide. Teenagers fail to recognize emotional depression caused by sexual actions.

The Bible says that thou shall not have pre-marital sex. I wish more people would think about that before going out and having casual sex. There are consequences for every action. You can wear a purity ring but if it doesn't keep you from impure actions then what's the point of wearing it to begin with.

I'm really afraid that these celebrities that wear purity rings (see: Jo Bros, Miley Cyrus, Jordan Sparks) really wear them for image reinforcement. Especially the disney stars. I find it hard to believe that they actually believe in sexual purity. A recent South Park episode made fun of the jewelry that the Jonas Brothers wear by having Mickey Mouse force them to wear the purity rings to maintain their clean image. It was definitely a funny episode, but it really got me thinking. Do these kids wear the rings because they're told to? Or do they wear them because they believe in the message? We'll never know the truth but I do find it interested that one of the Jo Bros decided to stop wearing his ring recently. Does that mean he's having sex? Of course, it's non of our business, but what message is that sending little girls everywhere?

The truth is, Purity isn't about a piece of jewelry that you wear on your finger. It's about God and making a promise and commitment to yourself that you'll save yourself till marriage.

My Purity Commitment Story

It was that time of the year again. The high school golf team had just won their last tournament of the year and it was time to celebrate. At our school golf is a way of life. Only the coolest of the cool get invited to this party, an invite guarantees a spot at school royalty. Let me start by saying I was no school princess. I had a great group of friends and we mainly kept to ourselves. We were different than most kids in our schools. We stood up for ourselves, and the things we believed in, most importantly, our faith. As we talked more and more about the party I started to get a little nervous. It started to hit me that my other friends weren’t invited and if I was to go to this party I would be going at it alone. I knew what these parties were like I knew there would be temptations. My girls talked me through it and even helped me pick out the perfect outfit. It was make or break time.

I pulled up to the party and was so full or nerves. This felt unreal. I said a prayer to myself and walked in strong and proud. I opened the door and was met by my favorite forever the sickest kids song blaring from the speakers. People were everywhere and everyone seemed to be having so much fun. I wished the clean clique could have been here with me but moved through the crowd to find a group I was familiar with. They were all lounging over by the goldfish tray as I walked up and said my hellos. I was greeted by tons of screaming and hugs. This was awesome. As we all stood around talking, a boy I hardly knew looked down at my hand and started laughing. I was confused and asked him what was wrong. He asked me what I was wearing on my finger. I happily explained to him the ring and what it meant to me. The group erupted in laughter, like a zoo exhibit full of chimpanzees. The room started to get dizzy and started to feel lost. The more I tried to explain the more they laughed. Even bobby and his stupid nike hat was there laughing at my expense. To these people the idea of purity and moral values was a joke. I don’t think I’ve ever ran out of a house faster than I did that night. I drove myself over to the sleep over where the rest of the clean clique was hanging out at. I explained to them what I had experienced with a face full of tears. We talked it out together and even opened up our devotionals to help get through the experience. I learned a valuable lesson that night, about real friends, faith, and the common teenager. We are a dime a dozen but we do exist. We don’t need parties or tons of friends running the wrong way through life. All we need is each other and our faith. It goes unsaid that the golf party was the last one I ever attended and that was fine with me. I had my faith and I had my friends. Who needs more than that?

He actually laughed and told me that they weren’t real. I couldn’t tell if this man was joking or not, so decided to thank him for his time, complimented the suit, and walked out. 

At this point I was at a loss. Where do I find these rings. I had seen plenty of people in church group wearing them so I knew they existed. I went home and popped in my new veggie tales DVD.
